Colombia sounds pretty exotic - and off the beaten path.
As a complete newbie I wonder what the safety issues are. Back in the seventies, Medellin was synonymous with cocaine. With the drug trade, of course, came violence.
Please note that I'm NOT looking to partake (spending the next decade in a foreign prison is not on the top of my list of things to do). I just want to party and get laid without worrying about getting robbed.
Also, is it possible to function only speaking English?
What is the general public's attitudes towards foreigners?
After living in Rio for almost 2 years I guess I can sum it up like this:
I never had a day in Rio where I felt as safe as I do everyday in Medellin. Your references are based more in an era about 10-15 years ago when Pablo Escobar was literally "running" this city. It is now very safe with a huge police and military presence. This is also the home town of the current president.
They have great universities here, a booming economy, very upscale malls, great transportation infrastructure, etc.
The locals are very friendly towards tourists and many stop me on the streets to ask where I am from. When I tell them I am living here and studying Spanish they break into big grins. Many ask why I chose Medellin. I tell them the climate, the people and it is very tranquil (and if it is a guy, I add because of all the beautiful women....LOL).
As far as Spanish, you should learn a little of the more important things, but many that visit here speak little or no Spanish and do just fine. It amazes me how many locals do speak English (albeit minimal) and how many are actually enrolled in courses to learn it. You can also hire English speaking taxi drivers.
